How to Contribute a Chapter

A step-by-step guide to expressing your interest, submitting your chapter, and getting published in an open access book with Contemporary Innovations Journal.

The Contribution Process

1

Browse Open Calls

Visit the Contribute page to see all books currently accepting chapter contributions. Each call shows the book overview, proposed chapter topics, word count requirements, referencing style, submission deadline, and APC (if applicable).

You can either select a proposed topic or suggest your own — as long as it fits within the book's scope.

2

Express Your Interest

Click "View Full Call & Express Interest" on any open call. Fill in the expression of interest form with:

  • Your name, email, affiliation, and ORCID iD
  • Your proposed chapter title and a brief abstract (150–300 words)
  • A short CV/bio summary highlighting relevant expertise
  • Any co-authors you plan to include
  • Your preferred chapter topic (or propose your own)

You do not need to be registered to submit an expression of interest, but creating a free account lets you track your submission status.

⏱ Timeline

Our editorial team reviews all expressions of interest within 5–10 business days and responds with a formal invitation or feedback by email.

3

Receive a Formal Invitation

If your expression of interest is approved, you will receive a formal invitation email with:

  • Confirmation of your chapter topic
  • Specific submission deadline for the full draft
  • Author guidelines and formatting template
  • Information on the APC (if applicable)
  • Details of the peer review process

Once invited, register or log in to your author account to begin your submission.

4

Write & Submit Your Chapter

Prepare your chapter according to the author guidelines. Key requirements:

  • Word count: as specified in the call (typically 5,000–10,000 words)
  • Format: Microsoft Word (.docx)
  • Referencing: as specified (APA, Harvard, etc.)
  • Figures and tables: embedded in the document with captions
  • Author bio: 100-word biography for each author
  • Originality declaration: confirm the work is original and not under review elsewhere

Submit via your author dashboard or as directed in the invitation email.

5

Peer Review & Revision

All submitted chapters undergo editorial and peer review. You may receive:

  • Accept: Your chapter is accepted as submitted or with minor edits
  • Minor revision: Small changes requested — typically 3–4 weeks to revise
  • Major revision: Significant changes required — typically 6–8 weeks
  • Rejection: Chapter does not meet the required standard or fit the book's scope

Revision instructions are sent via your author dashboard with clear guidance on what changes are needed.

6

APC Payment (Upon Acceptance)

If your chapter is accepted, an invoice is issued for the Chapter Processing Charge (APC). No payment is required at any earlier stage.

💳 Current APC

USD 359.00  /  NGN 285,950 per accepted chapter

Covers editorial processing, DOI registration, format conversion (HTML/PDF/EPUB/XML), repository submission, and perpetual open access hosting.

Payment is accepted via Paystack (International card), Flutterwave (card, bank, USSD — Nigeria), Nigerian bank transfer, or international wire transfer. Log in to your author dashboard to pay after acceptance.

7

Production & Publication

After APC payment is confirmed, your chapter enters production:

  • Professional copyediting and typesetting
  • Automatic conversion to HTML, PDF, EPUB, and XML formats
  • DOI registered with CrossRef for each chapter
  • Metadata submitted to DOAB, OpenAIRE, Google Scholar, BASE, and CORE
  • Your ORCID iD linked to the chapter on all platforms
  • Published under Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Adaptable 4.0 (CC BY NC SA 4.0) licence

You will receive an email confirmation with a link to your published chapter and DOI.

8

Track Your Impact

After publication, log in to your author dashboard to see real-time download statistics, view counts, and citation data for your chapter. Your chapter is freely accessible to readers worldwide — permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I contribute to more than one book at the same time?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of books you can contribute to simultaneously, provided each chapter is original and not submitted elsewhere. However, contributing multiple chapters to the same book is subject to the call's stated limit (typically 1–3 chapters per author).

Do I need to have a PhD to contribute?

No. We welcome contributions from researchers at all career stages — postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and established academics. What matters is the quality and originality of your chapter.

Can I co-author a chapter?

Yes. You can have multiple co-authors on a single chapter. All authors must be listed in the expression of interest and all will receive authorship credit and have their ORCID iDs linked upon publication. The submitting author is responsible for APC payment.

What happens if I miss the submission deadline?

Contact the editorial team as soon as possible if you need an extension. Extensions may be granted at the editor's discretion. If a chapter is not delivered within 7 days of the deadline without a confirmed extension, the invitation may be withdrawn.

Is the APC refundable if my chapter is rejected after revision?

No APC is charged until your chapter is accepted. If your chapter is accepted and you pay the APC but the chapter is subsequently retracted due to a publisher error, a full refund will be issued. Refunds are not issued for rejections that occur before payment.

Can my institution pay the APC on my behalf?

Yes. If your institution or funder covers APCs (e.g., via a Read & Publish agreement or open access fund), it is your responsibility to confirm and arrange this before the APC due date. Contact us and we can issue the invoice directly to your institution.

What referencing style should I use?

The required referencing style is specified in each call for chapters. Common styles include APA, Harvard, MLA, Chicago, Vancouver, and IEEE. Always follow the style stated in your invitation letter.

Will my chapter be indexed in Google Scholar and other databases?

Yes. All published chapters receive a DOI and metadata is submitted to CrossRef, DOAB, OpenAIRE, Google Scholar, BASE, and CORE. Your chapter will be discoverable and citable worldwide.
